Subject: TV3 MUST IMMEDIATELY RENDER AN UNQUALIFIED APOLOGY TO THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION OF GHANA
Greetings from the new leadership of the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG). On behalf of the over 100,000 University Students across the length and breath of Ghana, we would like to express our disappointment in TV3 and demand an apology from them for their unfortunate and mediocre production work done on 28th October, 2017 during their News @ 10pm broadcast.
Our attention was drawn to a live interview by TV3 News @ 10pm with one Joseph Agyekum claiming to be ‘USAG President’. Setting the record straight, He is an imposter and a fraud.
Ordinarily, this imposter deserves not our attention with any response because it is very funny how someone can appoint himself as a President. But we are mindful of the possible damage that this imposter may do to the good name of our beloved USAG. His inordinate desire to wield power has the potential of bringing confusion and consequently, chaos in the association of noble Ghanaian University Students.
USAG, as an association which respects it’s democratic rules, followed due process to elect her executives during an Emergency Congress organized at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani on the 23rd of September, 2017 with results declared on 24th of September, 2017. Congress, the highest decision making body of USAG and the only medium through which we democratically elect our leaders, voted overwhelmingly to endorse OPPONG KESSE ALBERT as President to administer the affairs of the Association for the 2017/2018 academic year. Out of the total votes cast, 90.40% of Delegates from various private and public Universities threw their support behind OPPONG KESSE ALBERT to be the legitimate President of USAG. Handing Over and Swearing-In from the 2016/2017 to the Oppong Albert Kesse led 2017/2018 administration was done on the 28th of October, 2017 at the Methodist University College, Dansoman Campus.
The University Students’ Association of Ghana have known, admired and respected TV3 for the apt disciplinary measures it takes against unethical people, even against their very own veteran workers who go astray. It was very shameful and appalling for a station of their calibre to interview a self-imposed executive of an association made up of intellectuals without a thorough background check. TV3, having won numerous awards with the most recent being “Best News Program of the Year” during the 2017 RTP Awards, we expected them to do better than they did. And as disciplined as they have always been, we are calling on them to apologize to USAG and give the legally elected Executives of USAG an opportunity to clear the airwaves within 14 days. Else we will take a legal action.
We are also sending a stern warning to the imposter to desist from this ungodly act else we shall refer him to the appropriate law enforcement agencies to deal with him accordingly or anybody at all who may try to use this means to put the name of our noble Association to disrepute.
To the media houses, we plead that you help uphold and defend the constitution of the University Students’ Association of Ghana. We believe you have a role to play in seeking the welfare of University Students of Ghana in order to promote intellectualism, national and personal development. We would like to also admonish media houses to be very circumspect regarding reportage and the information they feed the public with as the media play a very sensitive role in our contemporary lives. If any information lacks accuracy, it deserves no audience.
If the front of leadership in USAG is not consolidated, we cannot deliver our duties with effectiveness and efficiency. We exist for that which is bigger than our own existence. We are all partners in the development of our Motherland.
