[Watch Highlights] FIFA U-17: Ghana beat Niger to set-up quarterfinal date with Mali

Black Starlets of Ghana rose up and convincingly defeated Niger in the round of 16 to set-up a quarterfinal clash with fellow African country Mali on Saturday.

Ghana continue to establish their dominance over Niger for a fourth time running in a calendar year to book a slot in the round of the competition.

The first half of the game saw the Starlets dominate at all departments and all angles resulting in 13 attempts to only one from the Nigeriens. All efforts from the attackers were swept aside by goalkeeper Khaled Lawali.

Ghana got their noses in front during stoppage time when striker and captian Eric Ayiah was brought down in the box by Farouk Idrissa. He stood up and converted the kick sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

After the break, the Starlets continued from where they left by mounting undue pressure on Niger. They occasionally bombed forward but had their incursions curtailed by a resolute Ghana defence.

Ayiah could have doubled the lead and his goal tally in the competition but his resultant penalty kick was saved this time as Lawali parried the ball away.

With the game heading to full time, substitute Richard Danso struck a voracious strike from long range, which fizzled through Lawali’s hands into the net for the second goal.

Ghana will meet Mali on Saturday in the quarterfinals at 11:30 am Ghana time.
