A matron at the Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region, Madam Grace Abudu, has been caught for allegedly diverting food items meant to feed students. The vigilance of some students and teachers of the school led to the seizure of five maxi bags of rice, three jerry cans of rice, two bags of beans, three bags of maize, seven packs of Omo detergents and a tin of tomato, which she had loaded in a tricycle and was being taken out of campus.
She allegedly admitted to stealing the foot items on her arrest last Saturday but later claimed she was sending the items for milling in town. The matron, who was handed over to the Police, has since been granted bail while investigations into the matter have started, the Police told 3News but did not give further details. The seized items are currently in Police custody.
Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Suzy Braimah, told 3News on Monday that she suspected that food items for the school were being diverted when she recently took over the administration of the school. She said apart from the Police, last Saturday’s stealing case has been reported to the district and regional Directorate of Education for the necessary action to be taken. The Regent of Tolon, Major (rtd) Abubakar Sulemana was said to have masterminded the transfer of the former Headmistress of the school, Madam Alice Achana for poor academic performances.
According to Maj Sulemana the performances of the school for about two years under the administration of Madam Achana was abysmal prompting him to take greater interest in the school. He said he consequently appealed to the Regional Educational directorate led by Alhaji Muhammad Haruna Cambodia, to transfer Madam Achana for among other things, alleged acts of abuse of her power. Maj Sulemana claimed when the free school uniform programme was introduced, Madam Achana denied tailors in Tolon District the opportunity to sew for students and earn a living as she gave all the contracts to those in the Kumbungu District.
