The National Science and Maths Quiz has been a remarkable event competition that sought to bring to senior high school students in Ghana a unique nostalgic feeling. Especially alumni, take immense pride in the performance of their alma mater.

It is interesting to know that the two-week annual quiz event comes with a moment full of emotions, arguments and social media trolls among several Ghanaian youth as to which school is the best and can claim bragging rights as the National Champions of Science and Maths.

Essentially, the National Science and Maths Quiz is delineated to promote the study of sciences and mathematics, help students develop quick thinking and a probing and scientific mind about the things around them, while fostering healthy academic rivalry among senior high schools.

The original idea to form a science and maths quiz geared towards encouraging the study of sciences and mathematics became necessary in 1993, when Mr. Kwaku Mensa-Bonsah, then Managing Director of Primetime, was curious to know why birds could stand on a live electric wire without getting electrocuted, but human beings could not do the same. This hunch came to him when he was playing a game of tennis at the University of Ghana’s tennis court with his tennis mates – the late Professors Marian Ewurama Addy and Ebenezer Kweku Awotwe. From Prof. Awotwe’s explanation, Mr. Mensa-Bonsah got the idea of putting together a quiz program on science and maths.

Prempeh College was the first to win the title in 1994 and subsequently went on to win the third edition in 1996.

So far, Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Presec) has won the title the most number of times. They are five times champions (1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009).

Unfortunately, no girls’ school has won the competition, despite being in the finals quite a number of times.

In the history of National Science and Maths Quiz, Achimota School is the only mixed school to have won the title. They have won the competition on two occasions- in 1998 and 2004. All other winners have been boys’ schools.

In 1999, Mfatsipim school was crowned the champions of the National Science and Maths Quiz for the first time. ”The Dwen Hwe Kan” students exhibited an incredible brain power over Weseley Girls’ High School which saw them emerging first.

The 2000 and 2001 editions saw the trophy move to the Eastern Region, as St. Peter’s Secondary School and Pope John Secondary School won the competition respectively. St. Peter’s would later win the 2005 edition of the quiz.

In the Ghana @ 50 edition of the quiz in 2007, St. Augustine’s College were crowned the proud winners. Ghana Secondary Technical School won the 2012 edition while St. Thomas Aquinas picked up the 2013 edition, beating stiff competition from Presbyterian Boys’ and a rather laid back Mfantsiman Girls’ team, in what was a keenly contested final.

After a nearly 15-year trophy drought, Mfantsipim School won the 19th edition in 2014, with Prempeh College winning the 20th and 22nd edition in 2015 and 2017.
