A REMARKABLE DAY IN THE HISTORY OF UEW
Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni Invested and Inducted as 4th Vice-Chancellor of UEW

17th September happens to be one of the remarkable days in the history of UEW as it saw the induction and investiture ceremony of the 4th Vice chancellor of the University who is in the person of Professor Anthony Afful Broni.
Professor Anthony Afful Broni received this appointment on the 17th day of August 2018 and was finally inducted.
This day saw great personalities in Ghana as they came to witness and grace the occasion and among such personalities were His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo the President the republic of Ghana, Dr. Matthew the minister of education,Hon Kennedy Agyapong a member of parliament for the people of Assin, Hon Alex Afenyo Markin, the member of parliament for Effutu and board Chairman for Ghana water company, Hon Asenso Boakye the chief of staff, Dominic Eduah former deputy National you organizer for NPP amongst others.
This event also saw the presence of religious personalities such as Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-buckle, national Chief Imam and notwithstanding the traditional council of Effutu and Assin were all present to grace this occasion.
Lest I forget members convocation as well as lecturers were fully dressed in their academic gowns which were very colorful.
Students from the University too were there to support their newly vice chancellor.
In fact what amazes as most was when students from the various senior high schools and a school spotted was Winneba secondary school holding sign boards with numerous achievements of Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo on them.
They started from the University’s main entrance together with TESCON UEW led by Hon Kojo Nkrumah and Augustine Acheampong president and vice as well as the entire TESCON executives to welcome the president of the republic. They gave him an escort till he got to to the auditorium where the entire students as well as members present hailed the president in laudation.
As a reporter for this event I became overwhelmed as I spotted members of convocation and lecturers with cheered faces hailing the president. In fact it was a happy moment.
Professor Anthony Afful Broni and His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo were escorted by students of the department of Music education with a melodious tune which made the people in the auditorium’s ears itch for more.
All became set when the opening prayer was said by the University’s chaplain before Professor Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah who happens to be the chairman of the university’s governing council constituted the assembly and gave his wonderful welcome address which became the talking point for about three minutes due to the heavy vocabulary he used. Indeed this man is epitome of knowledge.
After this session, a musical interlude was given to us by the department of Music education.
Dr. Christiana Hammond therefore presented us the profile of Professor Anthony Afful Broni and the way and manner she read to the house really depicts that she’s from the department of Media and communication and media studies.
Her pronunciations and ascents were spectacularly on point which the whole people in the auditorium clapped and chanted her name after the presentation of the profile.
Again, the chairman of the University council by power vested in him did the honourable thing by investing Professor Anthony Afful Broni as the 4th Vice chancellor of the University,
Then comes the induction ceremony done by the Most Rev Fr. Charles Gabriel Palmer-buckle.
After this comes another spectacular performance by the department of Music education as they performed the most difficult classical song entitled “Zadok the priest” which saw a very brilliant female organist doing the magic on the black and white keyboard.
The most emotional moment came when the mother of Professor Anthony Afful Broni’s was called to come and wish his son well, indeed it was a great scene as the old lady hugged her son in the midst of the entire people, in fact producing a vice chancellor ain’t easy mom God bless you for giving us such a great person like Prof.
The musical interlude and laudation poems continued as the people in the auditorium were happily enjoying the tunes.
It was after this that Professor Anthony Afful Broni was called to give his address.
Professor Anthony Afful Broni’s fluency is very sensational as well as his courageous in the presentation sent a ripple to all the people to shout with acclamation with joy.
Indeed the Vice chancellor assured us all to wait and see the new infrastructural development come next month. He added that under his leadership will see to the transformation of a New UEW where everyone will love to be. An academic discourse which innovative ideas and research will be the basis of teacher education in the country.
He also commended Professor Jophus Anamuah Mensah for his unflinching support for the University and is proud of him.
Professor Anthony Afful Broni also stated on record that this year has seen a great increment in the admitting of students into the University as the University picked 15000 students from the 45000 applicants. He added that the total population of UEW is over 65000 and wishing it increased into 70000 in the subsequent days.
Prof also commended His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo on the implementation of the free SHS as well as the double track system and therefore declared his support for the president.
He ended his address by calling on all students as well as lecturers to work harder to ensure the betterment of UEW and notwithstanding said he will do everything humanly possible to ensure that UEW become great which will become a model for other universities around the globe.
Moreover the department of Music education continued to sing for us and in fact we really enjoyed and what Hon Naa Adoley Ankrah, vice President of Political Science Students Association said said was “no wonder they’re music students”
The climax of the event came when His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo took over podium to give his address. He presented very audibly as usual.
He used this opportunity to congratulates Professor Anthony Afful Broni once again and urged him of seeing a transformed UEW.
He also commended Professor Jophus Anamuah Mensah on the great work doing in the field of education and told him to continue with the hard work.
Furthermore, the council chairman dissoluted the assembly which led the end of the program.
The University chaplain said the final prayer.
In conclusion, 17th September can never be wiped away from the history books of UEW but will forever be remembered.
Moving forward Professor Anthony Afful Broni’s 20years spent in UEW have seen him being a senior lecturer at the department of psychology and education rising to become the University chaplain, Dean, Pro vice chancellor, acting Vice chancellor then Vice chancellor.
He’s the first Catholic priest to head a public university in the history of Ghana.
UEW North Campus coordinator and correspondent
