80-year-old Houston grandma earns a college degree
HOUSTON — Grandma’s logic is hard to dispute: If she can graduate with a degree at age 80, so can anyone else.
Beatrice Lillie walked the stage last month at NRG Stadium to receive her diploma at Houston Community College’s commencement ceremony, KTRK reported.
“I did it to set an example for my children and grandchildren,” Lillie told the television station. “’ If Grandma can do it, I can do it.’”
Lillie earned her associate degree in business management from the school’s Business Center of Excellence, KHOU reported.

Lillie completed the requirements for her degree in four years, KTRK reported. Most of her grandchildren are enrolled in college, the television station reported.
While this is Lillie’s first college degree, her business experience is extensive. She owned an answering service in the era before voicemail and cellphones and also worked as a secretary in Harris County’s Probation Department, KTRK reported.
Lillie said she received plenty of encouragement from her younger classmates.
“I also learned about diversity and an appreciation for art,” Lillie told the television station. “There were young ladies who looked at me and said they could do it if I could do it.”
Armed with her degree, Lillie said she is comfortable with a computer but also spends her time as a volunteer at the Northeast Houston Multi-Service Center, KHOU reported.
“I would not have believed it, I don’t think, although we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us,” Lillie said about earning her degree.
