While enrolling in basic school, I heard, read and witnessed people debating about which high school is the best in Ghana.
These arguments were fierce as people could spend their whole day engaging in this banter based on facts available to them.
Some argued based on the academic achievements of their schools, while others debated based on the composure of their students (their dressing and ‘kominini’).
Right after completing Junior High School, I gained admission to St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School.
Funny enough, I saw myself doing exactly what I used to only be a spectator of (debating on which SHS is the best).
Here I am now, a student of Ghana’s premier university.
I guess you’re thinking that I’m perhaps caught up in the argument of which University is the best in Ghana? Yes, your guess is right.
Fortunately, over the past years, I’ve been a ‘Legonite’, the facts continue to show that indeed UG as its called by many, is not only the best in Ghana but in the sub-region.
While other Universities use UG as a yardstick for measuring their performance, UG is focused on becoming a world-class University.
The University of Ghana, among other things, has many facilities including the biggest library in West Africa, the Balme Library.
Being a UG student means you have access to one of the most well-resourced libraries in West Africa and thus have the opportunity to get all relevant books and materials needed to help you gain knowledge (Le-gon, Hill of Knowledge).
University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) is one of the most sophisticated medical facility in Ghana. And this is one of the edifice the University of Ghana can boast of (not to even talk about Noguchie Memorial Medical Centre).
Among other facilities, the University Houses some 5 traditional halls of residence and 8 other private hostels.
Two of the most popular halls includes Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall, both halls have produced well-acclaimed personalities both in politics and the cooperate world.
Two immediate past Presidents of Ghana, as well as the current President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are product of the University of Ghana.
The speaker of Ghana’s parliament, Hon. Mike Oquaye is part of the tall list of personalities that have enrolled at the University of Ghana.
In terms of extra curricular activities such as sports and entertainment, UG has claimed numerous laurels from Ghana, Africa and the world at large.
These are just a few of the millions of things which make being a UG student or alumni fulfilling.
Now just before you finish reading, take a pause, ask anyone around you which University is the best in Ghana, and guess what, the person will tell you point blank it’s the premier University of Ghana!
