The University students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has observed with great concern the silence of the Ministry of education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the pandemic coronary virus outbreak in the People’s Republic of China and the absence of information on the safety measures putting in place to safe guard Ghanaian students outside the country, particularly in China.
It is in this light we call on the Ghanaian government to bring back home our dear students who are largely exposed to this risk. This call is founded on;
- The deadly coronary virus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.
The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries. This statistics means that the Ghanaian students everywhere risk losing their lives in the face of this outbreak should things remain same.
However, students in China have a peculiar case since China is the country been affected the most. Most international cases are in people who had been to Wuhan in Hubei.
Currently there is over 11,952 cases of Coronary virus recorded with a dead toll of 259.
- Ghanaian students who are exposed to the horrifying situation in China have for the past weeks demanded a return back to the country. USAG stands with the concerns of all our students in China especially, those in the Wuhan city. It must be noted that, these students have receded on their calls to government and seem to have backtracked in their earlier position on the grounds that foodstuffs have been supplied to them by the leadership of the Ghana diplomatic coup of which our students claim they are good for now.
However, insofar as the disease still persist and they cannot go about their normal duties, they must not be left to this risk just with a mere supply of provisions which is mutually exclusive to contracting the disease.
- The practice of evacuating our dear ones is not alien and an oddity. This will be to follow the already created path of the United States, France, Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, United Kingdom and the likes who have already evacuated or declared their intentions to evacuate its students and citizens back home.
It is on the strength of the aforementioned that the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) humbly calls on the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health and all other stakeholder(s) to evacuate our fellow students in China due to the fast increasing numbers of people contracting the disease as a way of safeguarding the lives of the Ghanaian people.
In a statement signed by the USAG President Paul Abrokwa, USAG also call on the government to put in place measures to protect the Ghanaian tertiary students and even beyond from contracting this disease.
